International praise for the UAE's pivotal role in supporting peace efforts around the world, with the conclusion of the United Nations police performance Workshop

Police leaders participating in the activities of the United Nations police performance Workshop expressed their appreciation for the pivotal and supportive role of the United Arab Emirates for international efforts seeking to maintain peace, spread the values of tolerance around the world, and enhance societal security and stability.


The international workshop focusing on the performance of UNPOL peacekeeping commanders successfully wrapped up its sessions today, which spanned four days, concluding on Sunday. During this intensive period, participants delved into strategies for elevating global police performance through institutional plans and initiatives. Notable figures in attendance included UNPOL commanders from around the world and the distinguished presence of HE Alexander Zuev, Assistant Secretary-General for the Rule of Law and Security Institutions at the United Nations, as well as Lieutenant General Faisal Shehkar, the UN Police Advisor.

The workshop addressed various topics, including performance improvement, challenges in peacekeeping operations, evolving operational environments, skill set requirements, and the operationalization of performance standards for individual officers. Participants engaged in informal discussions regarding emerging operating contexts, requirements, best practices, and lessons learned across UN missions, all in pursuit of maintaining peace.



The event brought together officials from United Nations Peace Operations from all over the world, including UN Police Division in the Department of Peace Operations, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), and key representatives from the UAE.

on the sidelines, the Steering Committee of the International Initiative of Law Enforcement for Climate (I2LEC) organized a specialized workshop in Abu Dhabi for UNPOL Peacekeeping Commanders, hosted by the Ministry of Interior. This event followed four days of focused discussions.


The workshop, titled Enforcement Beyond Borders: Tackling Climate-linked Disasters and Illicit Wildlife Trade, aimed to introduce UNPOL commanders to the goals, principles, and projects of the I2LEC. This initiative, rolled out in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, originated in the UAE.
The purpose was to equip leaders of UNPOL peacekeeping commanders with the knowledge, skills, and strategies required to effectively combat environmental crimes.

At the workshop, Diego Reyes, Assistant Program Manager at UNEP, discussed the basics of climate-related disasters, while Giovanni Broussard, Coordinator, UNODC Environment Team in Africa, addressed the issue of cross-border wildlife trafficking and its impact on biodiversity.
Subsequently, Hamad Al Kaabi, a research specialist in the Executive Office of Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing in the UAE, covered the financial aspects of illegal wildlife trade. Colonel Dr. Omar Al Shehhi, Head of the Research and Development Center at the UAE Ministry of Interior, focused on performance management within the Ministry.

Following these presentations, the International Affairs Office at the Ministry of Interior, expressed gratitude to all contributors, emphasizing that the workshop aligns with ongoing efforts to achieve the global initiative’s strategic goals.
