The Artificial Intelligence for Safer Children initiative stands as a groundbreaking international collaboration between the Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates (MOI UAE) and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). This forward-thinking initiative reflects a strategic commitment to harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen child protection mechanisms across the globe. With the rise of technology in nearly every aspect of life, children face growing threats both online and offline. From cyberbullying and online grooming to human trafficking and physical abuse, the risks are evolving and so must our methods of intervention and prevention.

Launched with a unified vision to enhance the safety and well-being of children in the digital era, the initiative brings together global expertise, policy innovation, and cutting-edge AI technologies to develop practical and scalable solutions. It is designed to support law enforcement agencies, policymakers, educators, and technology providers in building a coordinated response to child exploitation. By establishing a platform for international cooperation, the initiative fosters knowledge exchange, promotes ethical AI practices, and encourages the development of tools that are both effective and safe.

A key component of the initiative is the Global Hub on AI for Safer Children, a collaborative digital space that connects child protection professionals, technologists, and law enforcement entities around the world. As of January 2025, the Global Hub has grown to include over 1,100 members from 120 countries, showcasing its wide international reach. More than 50 technology providers have contributed to the initiative by offering over 90 innovative AI tools, including solutions for detecting online child sexual abuse material (CSAM), flagging harmful content, and facilitating victim identification.

Through this dynamic partnership, the Ministry of Interior and UNICRI are working hand in hand to set international benchmarks for AI use in child protection, while emphasizing the importance of ethical deployment and responsible innovation. The initiative not only supports capacity-building within law enforcement agencies through training and joint operations but also aims to ensure that AI becomes a force for good serving the needs of children, supporting caregivers, and enhancing the capabilities of those tasked with protecting them.

Both the Ministry of Interior and UNICRI reaffirm their unwavering commitment to placing the safety and dignity of children at the center of their work. They recognize that children are society’s most precious asset and that protecting them requires proactive, collaborative, and technologically advanced approaches. The AI for Safer Children initiative will continue to expand its global impact through ongoing training programs, operational partnerships, and development of new tools tailored to emerging threats.
In a world of increasing complexity, this initiative symbolizes hope, resilience, and the power of innovation ensuring that AI is not just a tool of progress, but a shield for the most vulnerable among us.
