“Innovation Lab” Organized by the Light Sports Committee

The Light Air Sports System Implementation Committee hosted an Innovation Lab dedicated to addressing the challenges and potential risks posed by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones.

The event brought together committee members, representatives from participating government agencies, and industry experts from the private sector, all working together to develop innovative solutions for the evolving landscape of light air sports.

In a recorded message, Major General Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Inspector General of the Ministry of Interior and Chairman of the Light Air Sports System Implementation Committee, emphasized the significance of the lab, noting, We come together to exchange experiences and visions on national topics that impact the quality of life in the UAE. Al Raisi highlighted that this collaborative effort with national institutions and agencies is crucial for achieving the UAE leadership’s vision of global excellence and competitiveness.

Al Raisi further outlined the need for secure, efficient airspace for drone users, noting the increasing security challenges associated with drones, which are easier to obtain than ever before. Drones, while beneficial for commercial and recreational purposes, also present risks; they can potentially be used for illicit activities like filming restricted areas, smuggling, and even terrorism.

The two-day Innovation Lab aimed to strengthen airspace security by exploring best practices and international benchmarks for drone safety and control, and developing strategic solutions to future challenges.

This forum included contributions from government agencies and private sector experts, underscoring the value of community partnerships in addressing shared concerns. Discussions were held on best practices and global standards to manage drone risks. The first session reviewed the UAE’s successful approach to drone risk management, while the second session focused on brainstorming sessions to share expertise, assess emerging technologies, and create actionable recommendations. Key topics included the civil use of drones, regulatory legislation, and the UAE’s ongoing projects to develop technical specifications for drones and establish a national drone registration platform. At the event’s conclusion, Major General Al Raisi thanked all contributors, underscoring the committee’s commitment to fostering safe and secure drone usage that enhances public safety in the UAE. Through initiatives like the Innovation Lab, the UAE continues to harness technological advancements and collaborative expertise to shape a secure future for drones in its airspace.
