UAE Rolls Out Initiative to Strengthen Skills of Punitive and Correctional Institution Staff
The General Directorate of Punitive and Correctional Institutions, in partnership with the General Directorate of Police Judiciary, has launched the Developing the Legal and Functional Capacities of Workers in Punitive and Correctional Institutions project. This strategic initiative aims to enhance the professional capabilities of staff in punitive and correctional facilities, foster a deeper understanding of job responsibilities, and promote adherence to ethical standards. It also seeks to instill a stronger culture of human rights in alignment with international agreements by reinforcing professional conduct and positive policing practices. Additionally, the project underscores the Ministry of Interior’s commitment to advancing professional competency by improving the efficiency and quality of legal and functional performance.
The launch ceremony, held at the Police Science and Technology Institute in Abu Dhabi, was attended by Brigadier Saeed Ali Lootah, Acting Director General of Punitive and Correctional Institutions, Brigadier Dr. Rashid Al Nuaimi, Director General of Police Judiciary, Brigadier Dr. Omar Ibrahim Al Ali, Director General of the General Directorate of Efficiency Development, Colonel Dr. Ali Al Darmaki, project supervisor, and Lieutenant Colonel Ibrahim Al Ghaithi, Executive Director of the project.
Spanning an entire year, the initiative includes an extensive series of specialized training workshops and lectures, covering critical areas such as legal proficiency for punitive and correctional institution staff, effective implementation of institutional policies, and a comprehensive understanding of inmates’ rights in accordance with both national laws and international regulations. The program also focuses on strengthening professional ethics, fostering positive police behavior, and refining administrative investigation skills related to inmate management.
Brigadier Dr. Rashid Al Nuaimi emphasized that the Development of Legal and Functional Capabilities project is a vital step in enhancing the efficiency and expertise of staff working in punitive and correctional institutions. By equipping personnel with essential legal knowledge and practical skills, the initiative aims to create a more effective work environment, improve service delivery, and position the sector at the forefront of global human rights standards. This project not only strengthens institutional performance but also reinforces the Ministry of Interior’s unwavering dedication to fostering justice, fairness, and a more rights-based approach to correctional management.
