MOI Celebrates the International Day of Peace
The Ministry of Interior, represented by its Human Rights Department, in collaboration with the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, marked the "International Day of Peace" by hosting a virtual workshop. This event focused on international humanitarian law, aiming to shed light on the legal frameworks, international standards, and the law's critical role in promoting human values and fostering global peace.
In his opening remarks, Brigadier Mohammed Ali Al Shehhi, Director of the Human Rights Department, emphasized the Ministry's commitment to participating in global events, particularly those centered on humanitarian values and the promotion of peace and tolerance. He highlighted that the workshop exemplified the fruitful cooperation between the Human Rights Department and the National Committee's implementation team.
The purpose was to raise awareness among participants about the significance of understanding international humanitarian law, its principles, and the necessary mechanisms for its enforcement in accordance with international standards. Major Dr. Hamad Al Shamili, an accredited lecturer by the International Committee of the Red Cross, elaborated on the concept of world peace and its noble goals. He discussed the protection of civilians and peaceful societies under international law, emphasizing the restriction of hostile actions.
Dr. Al Shamili also clarified the distinctions and parallels between international human rights law and international humanitarian law. He went on to explain the guarantees provided to protected groups under humanitarian law, which include the preservation of rights and humane treatment under all conditions, as well as the prohibition of violence, threats, and acts that undermine dignity. Additionally, Dr. Al Shamili discussed the punitive measures in place for violations of international humanitarian law, noting the right of signatory parties to take necessary actions against those who disregard the law.
The workshop also highlighted the role of the International Criminal Court, which is responsible for prosecuting crimes within its jurisdiction, such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and acts of aggression. Concluding the session, Dr. Al Shamili recognized the UAE’s leading efforts in promoting global peace through its participation in international treaties and alliances. He praised the country’s commitment to fostering tolerance, safety, and stability within societies, and its proactive approach to resolving conflicts and reducing tensions.
The UAE's humanitarian work and contributions to international peace initiatives have earned global recognition, positioning it as a model for charitable giving and conflict resolution.
